Phase III of UNFPA-UNICEF JOINT PROGRAM TO ELIMINATE FGM/C (for the period 2018 to 2021)

UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme to Eliminate Female Genital Mutilation

UNFPA and UNICEF jointly lead the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of female genital mutilation (FGM). The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme harnesses the complementary expertise of the two agencies, with governments and often in close collaboration with grass-roots community organizations and other key stakeholders, backed by the latest social science research.

The FGM Joint Programme achievements at a glance

  • More than 2.3 million girls and women have benefitted from protection against FGM and received specialized care services
  • 25 million people in more than 18,000 communities in 15 countries with high FGM prevalence made public declarations to abandon the harmful practice
  • 17 governments were supported to set up national FGM response mechanisms, and 12 countries were supported to set up national budget lines to finance their own FGM-related programmes
  • The programme directly contributed to the enactment of laws banning FGM in the Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda; it also enabled capacity building and enforcement of legislation, resulting in 700 arrests to date

The time to act is now

Over 200 million girls and women have experienced FGM in 30 countries across three continents. Today, a girl is about one third less likely to be cut than in 1997. Still, without concerted and accelerated action, a further 54 million girls are likely to be cut by 2030.

Phase III of UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme to Eliminate FGM

Starting in 2018, UNFPA and UNICEF are continuing the joint effort, integrating complementary interventions even more systematically under a new phase of the Joint Programme. The joint action builds on valuable lessons learned and is directly linked to the Sustainable Development Goal 5.3, which aims to end all harmful practices by 2030. The focus continues to be on countries with highest FGM prevalence, with the aim of shifting social norms in affected communities while working with governments to put in place viable national response systems.

Targets for Phase III include:
  • 8 million girls and women will receive appropriate FGM-related services
  • 19 million people in over 10,000 communities will publicly declare abandonment of FGM
  • 16 countries will have a national budget line and monitoring mechanism
  • Regional and sub-regional political organizations will be mobilized to enhance national efforts
  • The availability of a global online knowledge hub

Join the effort

UNFPA and UNICEF welcome funding commitments from the public and private sector to help reach a resource target of $X million, for the period 2018 to 2021
, which is required to meet the Joint Programme's objective of accelerated change.
Commitments to the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on Female Genital Mutilation will improve and expand our work, which currently is supported by a range of generous donors, including the European Union, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

We'll not handover the church to rascals - Pastor Kumuyi

Vanguard News Nigeria

….charges members on obedience to leadership

THE General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, Saturday, maintained that the church will not be handed over to ‘rascals’ who are not portraying the image of Christ in their character.

Kumuyi made the declaration via a satellite broadcast from headquarters of the church in Lagos, while teaching on the topic, ‘Fear Not: The Promise Is Still Good’ during the Faith Clinic session at the ongoing Deeper Life National December Retreat, holding at the Deeper Life Conference Centre (DLCC), which started on Friday, December 21 and ends December 25.

He said the church will not condone any form of rascality and rebellion because the word of God never encourages that and is a strange behaviour capable of taking one to hell fire.

He said: “We are not going to hand the church over to rascals, over to rebellious people that want to scatter everything that is good that the Lord is doing. If you …
